It was a brisk October evening and Rollover had just ended. Everyone in Horse Eden was working diligently on making their best matches as they do every year, but this one was different. The vast amount of culling that took place was unthinkable. There were bodies everywhere- the sights, the sounds- all terrifying. Begging and pleas were heard echoing throughout the land. People crying and screaming, looking up and asking why, how could you let this happen to me? Thinking that things could not get any worse… but they were wrong. Very, very wrong. They fell asleep that night if they dared to do so, unknowing of the sheer carnage and terror they would still face when they dared to wake up.
Something mystical happened. The stars and the moons may have aligned just right or maybe it was an alien invasion. When the players of HEE had awakened from their horrific memories of the Rollover the night before, they looked all over the land of Eden and were dismayed. How, how could this have happened? Every mismatched horse, every unwanted foal, all the old horses, every animal sent to the free range to meet their fate, was back. They were alive but not living… they were dare I say… Zombies… and they were taking over Eden and looking for vengeance.
Zeke the Zombie: Created by Timber CanyonThe horse zombies seem to have a “human” leader. You might know her as Lauren, but we know her as Zomb. If you are not careful, she could zombify you as well. She is not the typical Zombie (that is why she spells her name differently)- she has a super, special power that can cause people to do unthinkable things. She is an artist. I heard she started doing art around the end of 2020, and has been very prolific with it since then. This is a very powerful weapon to behold as I have known people who have fallen victim to her skills and they have become what we now know as art hoarders. So much worse than the zombie horses she controls over the land.daniel-jensen@unsplashThey say she was a normal girl who was inspired heavily by her favorite and extremely talented aunt. She would spend hours watching her aunt draw and she longed to be able to share the same talent. She pleaded with her aunt to share her secrets, but her requests were denied. So she decided to teach herself. She started drawing with pencil and eventually moved on to digital art. Her skills quickly improved with every stroke. When she started her manipulations on HEE, she focused heavily on the talents of the Tier 1 artists and studied, spending countless hours learning to mimic their magical ways. She felt confident she had a grasp on how the art was done and developed her own style and opened her first shop which is now closed. She has a Tier 2 premade shop you can order from, but eventually she hopes to open another as a Tier 1 artist.
During the day she has been known to disguise herself, and she fits in among the living having normal everyday interests such as sports and cars. She practices her traditional art to hone her skills using pencil and colored pencils. She draws anything you can think of, animals and people. She has even been known to paint tiles and do some 3D modeling. It is rumored that she has a weakness. It can bring her to her knees in a quick second and nobody ever knows when it will strike. But it is every artist’s fear… Artist’s Block. It has taken down many an artist and has been known to torment Zomb a time or two but she is strong in her powers and thus, has been able to overcome it. The land of Eden will always remember the Legend of the Invasion of Zomb. We may never know how she actually became the zombie horse queen… but I strongly suspect that it may have been from watching The Walking Dead for far too many seasons.  SCF

The grass was frosted white from the chill of last night, and the sky was streaked with red and pink as the sun rose above the treeline. There’d be a storm later, but for now, the view between Willow’s ears was the most gorgeous thing Emma had seen in a long time.
She patted her mare’s shoulder appreciatively. It had taken an early wake-up, skipped breakfast, and rushing through feeding time to get on her back before sunrise, and it had been worth it. There were still stalls to clean when she got back, but the rest of the day was open for her to tinker around the farm, fixing whatever needed to be fixed.
Catherine was right. She could do this.
Willow nickered. Deer emerged from the trees, staring at them with wide eyes, switching their white tails back and forth. They seemed curious about Emma and Willow’s presence, but not entirely concerned.
The light turned golden as the sun burst out over the thin veneer of clouds and poured down into the valley that hugged Greenhollow. That was Emma’s cue to head back, and it was with great reluctance that she turned Willow around. The mare snorted with eagerness to move, and the strange spell that had been cast over the clearing shattered. The deer charged back into the woods, and Willow burst into her easy, rocking-horse canter.
Emma let her. The wind pushed her hair back and she tipped her face up to the sunlight as Willow stretched out, delighting in the cold, in the run and in the familiar weight of her rider on her back, standing lightly in her stirrups and hands buried in the mane and woolly coat. It had been far too long since they had done this.
All too soon, they came over the top of the hill, and beneath them was Greenhollow. It was made perfect by distance- Emma couldn’t see the chipped paint on the barn, or the holes torn in the grass by Spartan, or that the arena needed dragging. It just looked tiny and beautiful beneath a sky that was rapidly spilling into blue, and her heart tugged at the sight of it.
Willow whinnied. Somebody whinnied back. Movement caught her eye.
Hannah mounted on Spartan. Riding alongside her, head bent conversationally, was Marion on Cash. The old horse ambled along as Spartan pranced, head high, testing Hannah’s hold on the reins and finding her competent. The sight made Emma smile. Wasn’t this what horses did best? They brought together the most unlikely people in the most wonderful way.
She pressed her heels against Willow’s sides and sent the mare down the hill, ready to face the rest of the day.
What did one wear to a meeting with the town’s richest horseman?
It wasn’t the sort of crisis Emma had been expecting, but as she stared into her closet, she couldn’t help but wonder. Would it be disrespectful to stay in her breeches, or was it what he would expect of a fellow farm owner?
She was running out of time.
“Jeans and a sweater it is,” she said to Rocco, who was laying on her bed, batting a bit of lint between his paws.
“Mrow.” The cat stood and jumped off, and a few moments later, she heard footsteps pounding up the porch and the door slamming open.
“Emma?” Red, for the first time in almost two days. There was something close to panic in his voice. “Emma, are you here?”
“I’m in my room,” she called back, annoyed, and yanked on her sweater as he appeared in the doorway. “Where’ve you been?”
“Emma? Oh, thank god.”
He crushed her into a hug, so that she was pinned between her sweater and his heartbeat. It crashed wildly against her ear. He’d been scared, and she wasn’t sure why, but she suddenly had a sick feeling in her stomach. “What happened?”
“Herrington’s dead.”
It took a moment.
“What? No. We have a meeting!”
“I know, that’s why I-” he released her and stepped back, running a hand over the back of his neck. He swallowed. She really had scared him. “I was driving back and saw the police lights. I knew you had a meeting with him, so I pulled over and asked. Davis couldn’t give me any details, but he’s dead.”
Emma shook her head. The day that had begun so gorgeously was rapidly turning to shit. “I can’t believe it. We were going to talk today. I was going to ask for advice.”

“Here, sit down.” Red’s brow was knit together with concern, so Emma let herself sit on the edge of her bed, though she felt fine. “Advice about what?”
“Just… running the farm. It’s overwhelming, you know?” She folded her hands in her lap and glanced up at Red. He frowned, and hot shame washed over her. He probably wouldn’t be overwhelmed if this was his farm. He’d grown up here, had been raised on the views she stole from the back of WIllow. “Sorry.”
“Don’t be. I should be more helpful, but it’s midterms right now and-”
“Is that where you’ve been?”
“In the library, studying.”
“You didn’t come home last night.”
He paused, and she tried to decipher the space between them. Was this still home for him? Was she making it awkward for him? But he’d rushed here from Herrington’s. That had to count for something.
Finally, he said, “I slept in the library. There’s a coffee shop next door. It wasn’t terrible.”
It sounded pretty terrible, but she didn’t want to argue the semantics of that.
“Well, I’m going to shower and change, then, unless you need me.” She couldn’t think what she would need him for, not at that exact moment. “I’m sorry about Herrington.”
“Nothing to be sorry for. I barely knew him.”
Red paused in the doorway. “Are you okay?”
“I am.”
He left, and she brought her knees up to her chin and twisted to stare out the window, at the glimpse of pasture between the trees. Maybe she wasn’t okay. There was a lot to think about, least of all Herrington’s sudden death. In a way, it reminded her of Catherine. Her killer had never been caught. Maybe they were still out there, watching, waiting. Maybe they had struck again.
Autumn pressed in, and with it, an early darkness. She wasn’t sure what would happen next.

The suspense at Greenhollow will continue in November!

Page: 8Issue 4  |   Vol. 1   |  Spooktober 2021The Eden EchoThe Voices of HEEWorking EquitationBy Clear River ArabiansHello, this is Clear River, 315425, and I'm going to tell you a bit about the sport of working equitation. I have competed for a little over two years in it. My competition horse is ‘I Want That One’ aka Duke, a 12-year-old thoroughbred-paint cross by All Time Fancy. I currently compete at the Intro level (Youth).
History of Working EquitationThe origins of the sport date back to the mid-1990s, where the sport was developed in places like Portugal and Spain with the main breeds featuring Iberian and Camargue horses, though now any horse of any breed can show. The sport is newly introduced to the US, so the small community is very friendly and tight-knit. With four phases, the WE sport encompasses a variety of skills that benefit both horse and rider. Most phases are completed in a two-day period, with dressage and Ease of handling first and then Speed and Cattle the second day.
Dressage TrialThe first phase is Dressage. The tests go up in difficulty by level-Intro (Youth and Open), Novice A, Novice B, Intermediate A, Intermediate B, Advanced, and Masters. The lowest level, Intro, can be ridden two handed with no cantering anytime during any phases. The masters level must be ridden one-handed, and the courses other than dressage are only cantering with flying changes. The dressage tests are scored similarly to Dressage, with many of the same aspects and things needed to get scored well.Photo Credit:  Michael T. Photography (bull spearing)
Ease of Handling (EOH) TrialThe second phase is Ease of Handling (EOH). This is the phase where obstacles come
into play. Representing things you would have to do in a day's work, some obstacles are opening a gate, lifting and shaking a jug, crossing a bridge, spearing a (wooden) bull, walking through varied terrain, doing single and double slalom (pole bending of sorts), and various other things. It is judged on balance, impulsion, and how well the horse and rider pair complete the obstacles. Here below we have me and my horse, Duke, completing the single slalom.
Photo credits: Samantha Dawn at Heart of a Cowgirl Photography, photo owned by Clear RiverSpeed TrialThe third phase we have is Speed Phase. A timed course, balance, speed, and impulsion are greatly desired. Here, you are completing the EOH obstacles as quickly and efficiently as possible. Any and all gaits are used.
Cattle Trial
In our final phase, we have the Cattle Phase (CP). In this phase, a team of four people are sent into a pen with cattle, where there is a specific cow marked. Using teamwork, the must sort their cow and their cow only into the pen before time runs out.
One day, I hope you will try out this wonderful sport yourself!!

2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1-1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 15-oz can 100% pure pumpkin (I use Libby's)

INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 325°F and set an oven rack in the middle position. Grease two 8 x 4-inch loaf pans with butter and dust with flour (alternatively, use a baking spray with flour in it, such as Pam with Flour or Baker's Joy).
In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until well combined; set aside.
In a large bowl beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until just blended. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Continue beating until very light and fluffy, a few minutes. Beat in the pumpkin. The mixture might look grainy and curdled at this point but that's okay.
Add the flour mixture and mix on low speed until combined.
Turn the batter into the prepared pans, dividing evenly, and bake for 65 – 75 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the loaves cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Enjoy with some butter and cinnamon sugar, or plain is delicious too!

HEE Genetics Decoded by: Dr. InksprenPart 1: Base Colors
anne-nygard@unsplash | photoholgic@unsplash | 266600One of the wonderful features that sets HEE apart is its use of semi-realistic genetics to determine coat color. Over the next several months I will write a series of articles explaining the various genes we have and what you need to know about them.” Today we will start with the genes that code for base colors. There are four base colors on HEE; all the various coats we have are the result of dilution genes and pattern genes modifying the base color. These base colors are black, bay, brown, and chestnut. There are two genes that work together to determine a horse's base color: extension and agouti. Before we go any further, we should probably do a brief review of basic genetics. Every horse has two copies of each gene. One copy is inherited from the sire and one copy from the dam. Each gene on HEE has two or three different versions, called alleles. (Note that some people use the terms “gene” and “allele” interchangeably, which can be confusing.) If a horse’s two copies of a gene are both the same allele, the horse is homozygous. But if the horse’s two copies of the gene are each different alleles, the horse is heterozygous.
Back to the genes for a moment. The first gene we will discuss is extension. Extension has two alleles. One is denoted as “E” and the other is “e”. The “E” allele codes for black pigment in the coat hairs. The “e” allele codes for red pigment in the coat hairs. So a horse that is homozygous EE with have black coat hairs, and a horse that is homozygous ee will have red coat hairs. But what about a heterozygous Ee horse? This is where dominance comes into play. One allele is usually dominant to the other; most genes on HEE operate by complete dominance (with one exception), which means a heterozygous horse physically looks like a horse that is homozygous for the dominant gene. The “E” allele for black pigment is dominant to the “e” allele for red pigment, so an Ee horse has black pigment.

In summary: EE and Ee horses produce black pigment, and ee horses produce red pigment. Now on two the second gene that affects base color: Agouti. Agouti is the one gene on HEE that has three alleles: “A”, “At”, and “a”. I listed them in order from most dominant to least dominant. In general, capital letters are used to refer to dominant alleles, and lowercase letters refer to recessive (non-dominant) alleles. “A” and “At” limit the distribution of black pigment on the body; in other words, a horse with these alleles will only have black pigment at the points. “A” results in a bay horse and “At” results in a brown horse. Browns typically have darker bodies than many bays, and they have pale hairs around their muzzles. The “a” allele does not limit the distribution of black pigment, resulting in a solid black horse. Because “A” and “At” work by limiting black pigment, they have no effect whatsoever on ee horses that do not produce black pigment in the first place.
In summary:
  1. Horses that are ee produce red pigment regardless of what alleles they have for the agouti gene; these horses have a chestnut base.
  2. Horses that are EE aa or Ee aa produce black pigment all over their bodies; these horses have a black base.
  3. Horses that are EE AtAt, EE Ata, Ee AtAt, or Ee Ata produce black pigment limited to the points in a way that results in a horse with a brown base.
  4. Horses that are EE AA, EE AAt, EE Aa, Ee AA, Ee AAt, or Ee Aa will produce black pigment limited to the points in a way that results in a horse with a bay base.
What about flaxen chestnut, liver chestnut, and seal brown? On HEE these special versions of base colors are not coded by any particular allele. A horse with the appropriate base color has a random chance of getting one of these special bases, and these special versions can be gained or lost with rerolls. The same is true for the variations of bay; it is entirely random whether your horse is mahogany bay, light bay, or blood bay.Well, that’s what I had for you today. Thank you for your time! Ink
