DublinMeet Dublin! Dublin is a 3 year old neutered male Irish Setter. He weighs about 40 pounds but still is the biggest snuggle-bug and lap dog. Dublin is incredibly photogenic but currently he’s displaying his favorite habit: imitating a slug. He acts pretty ferocious when people come to the door but the worst he might do is sit on them so that they might be able to pet him better. Vote Dublin!Jack FleaThis is Jack Flea, a 10 year old mix.
6 years ago, he was abandoned on our doorstep with a broken leg, starving and flea-ridden. He was terrified of humans but eventually we managed to train him into coming into the house. Since then, he has been happy and free, wandering around the mountains with his friends, and smiling all the time! He's super friendly and loves being cuddled. He's super-small as he only weighs 2kg (4.4 lb)!
Thanks for reading Jack's story
Ruka6 month old heeler pup, she is my reason to wake up. Ruka loves people and is extremely intelligent. She can be rambunctious, but can also be an amazing couch potato companion when in need of cuddles. She is the bestest girl and loves to give kisses!
TuckerTuck is a 2 year old mutt of unknown, though heavy shepherd, breeding. He is a huge cuddle bug and enjoys the attention, although ever since Ruka joined the family he has been acting like a grandpa. He loves to go for rides in the truck and is always by my side when walking the field to bring in the horse. He's a regular hobby farm dog, but especially enjoys hanging out under the porch. He's overall a big dork that just enjoys living his lifeCopperCopper is my couch hog. He's a 10 year old Gordon Setter who absolutely adores small children. He likes me but not nearly as much as he does them. Running is waaayyy overrated these days but he'll never lot you forget your evening walk. And this goofball likes to eat bees. Vote Copper!RileyRiley: When I adopted Riley, she was nine weeks old and hadn't had any contact with humans other than two volunteers for a day. She was incredibly shy and took a while to warm up to us - humans, according to her puppy self, weren't to be messed with. Even now, she retains some of that suspicion, and takes great care to warn me about the 'dangerous' black bags on our walks. She isn't very cuddly, but whenever she feels slightly neglected or just needs some attention - don't we all? - she'll pad up to the nearest person and put her forehead in our knees; or, if a bedroom door is open, she'll gently take a pillow off a bed and drop it by our feet. Her little quirks - if she sees a dog, she'll lie down and watch them, tail wagging, until they've either passed or stopped to greet her; she often sits outside in the pouring rain even after repeated attempts to bring her inside; - are just ways that make her Riley, and I couldn't imagine changing a single thing about her.PhoebePhoebe: Even as I write, Phoebe is sitting under my feet and licking them with the greatest care - if you ignore the occasional nibbles that she just can't resist. Phoebe is by far the cuddliest dog I've ever met. When she was younger (by that, I mean three months; she's still only seven months) she struggled to sleep unless she was on someone's lap, and even now it's still her preferred option. The closer she can get to you, the better, is her life motto. She's always down for fun and games and is known to sprint around the house like a thunderbolt at around 4pm each day. Training-wise, I'm interested in competing in agility with her once she's older and her bones/body has matured, but for now I'm focusing on teaching her cues and building up a solid confidence.SiennaMy name is Sienna, mom tells everyone I’m a Shollie although we’re not really sure we just need something to say to the average of five people I receive compliments from everyday! Mom found me in a park running scared when I was very little, when weeks passed and no one claimed me she decided to keep me, back then my eyes were green like her’s! Now that I’m older they’re golden yellow. Vote for me so mom gives me an extra treat ;)DottieDottie is a three year old pitbull mix. She was rescued from the local shelter
and was very nervous of her new life when she was first adopted. Two years later and she’s the
happiest furbaby around! She loves supervising her dad when he’s working on the house - she
can help with anything! Her mom likes to leave bright red lipstick kisses on her forehead so
everyone knows she is loved! When Dottie gets excited - her whole body turns red! She can’t
help but wear her heart on her sleeve! She loves when people visit, but also really likes when
it’s just mom and dad at home snuggling with her on the couch.
Summer & PuppiesSummer came in pregnant from a hoarding situation (about 90 dogs on
the property). At first she was nervous about all the people who kept checking in on her, giving
her yummy food, and fluffing up the pillows on her bed. On May 2nd, Summer welcomed ten
healthy and squirmy puppies into the world! They were absolutely perfect! She then had to
contend with staff and volunteers coming to peer over the kennel gate, cooing at the beautiful
babies and the wonderful mom. She was a good mom - although often exhausted from taking
care of and feeding ten puppies! After weaning the puppies, and some extra TLC and rest,
Summer is now available for adoption and is so excited to meet everyone who comes in!

LunaNow, of course I love my dog but I have to admit, she's not the prettiest, I own 2 dogs, my dog in this entry is named Luna, she's an AKC registered Pug and I've had her since she was born, I just fell in love with her
If I'm being honest, her personality is more human like then dog.
First off, Luna loves sleeping, cuddles and all that, She doesn't know how to play with other dogs, she doesn't know how to play fetch, she doesn't know how to walk through glass doors when they're open and even though we moved to France a few years back, she gets scared when people speak french around her.
She loves food though. Walks and runs are her favourite thing despite her tiny legs. She loves company even if she doesn't know how to play properly and before I go on a full 10,000 word rant about her, I'll end off her entry here.
Thank you for this chance <3

be a snow day! It’s fun to eat, it’s fun to roll in, and it’s fun to dance in! Juliet was adopted in May and is
now a big sister to five cats! And she loves each and every one of them! (they tolerate her existence, and
sometimes even groom her - when she sits still for long enough). Juliet’s Fun Fact: Juliet was born deaf
and partially blind. Unfortunately, Aussie Shepherds have a color genetic disorder that leads to puppies
born deaf and having their vision affected. Her disabilities never stopped Juliet and she showed just how

PAGE 9The Eden Echo:The Voices of HEEIssue 2 | Vol. 1 | August 2021Stirrup Suspense StoriesMystery at GreenhollowA FirstLightFarm featured storyChapter ~Two~
The truck pulled into the driveway later that week, nondescript and tinted with mud-spattered tires and running boards. Not unusual in these parts, but not one that Emma had ever seen before at Greenhollow. It drove up towards the house, then paused and turned towards the barn, where she was unsuccessfully trying to wrangle Spartan into a paddock.
“Give me a moment,” she shouted as the truck door opened. She really didn’t have time for a visitor. Red had called Spartan crazy, but over the past few days Emma had collected a few choice descriptors for him, most unrepeatable.
“Do you need help?” It was a man’s voice, but Emma didn’t spare him a glance as Spartan stood on his hind legs and threw his head, nearly tearing the leadline from her hands despite the chain she had wrapped around his halter. She couldn’t understand the horse. He refused to leave the barn, but refused to enter his paddock. Everything had to be difficult with him. How did Hannah manage to ride this thing, let alone event him?
“No, I need you to stay away,” she snapped.
Finally, Spartan spurted through the gate and swung around. Emma unhooked the leadrope, not bothering to remove his halter, and slammed the gate shut.
“Pretty horse,” the visitor observed.
“Sure,” Emma said, but she paused to watch Spartan race around the paddock, tail flipped over his back. The visitor wasn’t wrong. Spartan was stunning, with a dark chocolate coat rippling with muscle and white stockings that flashed up over his knees and a streak of white that travelled from his left eye down towards his right nostril. He was an incredible mover, too. His trot was bigger than Willow’s at any rate, and his canter was lovely and uphill. “You can try riding him.”
He chuckled. “Are you Emma Wilder?”
Emma turned to survey him and was surprised to find herself face-to-face with a uniformed officer. Davis, his nametag said. He looked older, and vaguely familiar, in the way that most people in a small town tend to look. “I am.” She wrangled her bad mood away. It wasn’t the officer’s fault that she had to deal with Spartan. “Is there a problem?”
“None at all. Just a few things to clear up.” He glanced around, and Emma took the moment to study the farm through fresh eyes. The weeks since Catherine's death had not worn kindly on the farm. The door on the barn was crooked, thanks to Spartan, and the top paneling of Willow’s paddock had been eaten down as her mare grew bored and restless. A hay delivery still remained unstacked in the driveway. Emma stifled a sigh. She was trying her best, and Red was helping somewhat, but they were falling behind. “Is Redford around?”
“He should be.” This must have been about Catherine. Maybe they’d found her killer? But Emma was sure they would’ve heard about it somewhere else, not standing in this last patch of sunlight on a Wednesday afternoon, with winter just lurking over their corners and autumn fringing the edges of the borderwoods golden. “He might be in the barn. We’re just finishing up for the night.”
Davis followed Emma inside as she slipped through the barn doors, eyes adjusting to the brighter interior lighting. Red was throwing a blanket over one of the boarder’s horses, and he glanced up only briefly when Emma cleared her throat to announce their arrival. “I’ll be with you in a moment.”
“That’s what Wilder said as well.”
Getting Red to hurry would be like herding cats. The rest of the horses were outside, or settled in their stalls for the night, so Emma just crossed her arms and waited, trying not to notice the nervous tapping of her heart. Whatever Davis had to say seemed more important than making sure that the horse’s blanket straps were even. She couldn’t imagine what it was about. If they hadn’t found her killer, then maybe more evidence? But why keep her in the loop? She wasn’t Catherine’s family, not like Red was. Unless- her cheeks flushed- Davis had misread the whole situation.
“Toss me a flake, Em?”
Relieved at the disruption in her thoughts, Emma turned. The few bales they’d dragged into the barn aisle were all unopened, so she pulled her pocketknife from her belt and slashed one open, grabbing an armful of the sweet timothy hay and passing it into the stall Red stood in. When she turned back, Davis was giving her an odd look.
“You keep that knife on you?” he asked.
“I do.” Emma couldn’t tell if he was suspicious or not, and was suddenly aware that they were only yards away from where Catherine’s body had been found. “It’s part of working on a farm. There’s bales to cut, wires, twine…” Was explaining herself even more suspicious? Lamely, she put it back on her belt.
Red finally stepped out of the stall and latched it securely behind him, face cool and composed, and it occurred to Emma that he’d been using the time with the blanket to make it that way. “I’m Redford Green,” he said, holding out a hand to Davis. “I’m guessing you’re here about Catherine? Is there any news?”
“In regards to Catherine, no. I’m here about her estate.”
Red lifted his eyebrows. “They finally released the will?”
It had been a point of contention. Emma wasn’t sure of the details- it certainly wasn’t any of her business- but she knew that Red’s parents wanted more of Catherine’s estate than had probably been given to them. It made her a little angry on Red’s behalf. He was the one in the family that loved horses, so of course the farm should go to him. If it went to his parents, it would probably be divided and sold off as another one of the subdivisions that kept cropping up on neighboring hills.
“They have,” Davis said. “And the contents of it are a little unusual. Are you prepared to hear it?”
Red nodded, though he looked as though he were bracing himself. “Let’s hear it.”
“You’ll see it instead.” Davis pulled an envelope from his pocket and handed it over to Red, with another odd look at Emma. She bit her lip. Was she not supposed to be here? This was Red’s inheritance. Red’s moment. But her feet stayed. She wanted to know the fate of the farm.
Red carefully ripped open the envelope and studied its contents. His eyebrows lifted. “This is enough for my student loans.”
“Generous,” Davis commented, and turned to Emma. “And you, Wilder, have managed to inherit the farm.”
“What?” Emma wasn’t sure who said it first, her or Red. The world spun a little. The farm. There was no way.
“There are stipulations, of course. A lawyer will be by in the morning with paperwork to officiate everything. But I figured I’d drop by and give you a heads up.” Davis smiled and tipped his hat.
“My parents didn’t get anything?” Red checked. He whistled. “That’ll make them mad.”
"That's for me to worry about. You have enough on your hands, I think," Davis said. Emma heard all this through a dim haze. She looked up, at the cobwebbed wooden beams of the barn, at the lightbulbs that needed replacing and at the dusty tack room door, and thought, this is mine now.
What did Red think? This was supposed to be his.
There was the sound of goodbyes, and Davis shook her hand, though Emma's mind was reeling too much for her to manage anything else, and then the barn door opening and shutting again, but not before a burst of chilly October air blew through. It was just her and Red now in the barn aisle, the horses on either side of them chewing their hay and unaware that Emma's entire future had changed in a single conversation. She shivered.
“Well, boss," Red said, and she was relieved to see that he was smiling. "It looks like tomorrow's going to be a big day for you."

3. In a large pitcher, combine the sugar syrup, strawberry puree, lemon juice, and remaining 4 cups of water. Adjust with more water or lemon juice to taste.
4. Serve as is or with mint leaves

Paradox's Perfect Party PunchSubmitted by Paradox Eliteboba-jaglicic@unsplashThe name says it all... this is the perfect punch for all your summertime social gatherings.  2 Liter Bottle Sierra Mist, Sprite or 7-up, chilled
2 Liter Bottle Club Soda, chilled
1 Fruit punch concentrate (12oz), or pink lemonade, thawed in the fridge
1 Pineapple juice concentrate (12oz), thawed in the fridge
6-8 scoops Raspberry Sherbet, or any flavor you have available
Garnish - Pineapple wedges, berries
-
1. Pre-scoop ice cream and place on a baking dish lined with plastic wrap. Freeze and add ice cream just before serving so it remains frozen in the punch.
2. In a punch bowl, combine: 2 juice cans. Pour in Sierra Mist and Club Soda and gently stir until combined.
3. Add pineapple slices and berries if using and top with scooped sherbet just before serving. The sherbet will keep it chilled. Add cold water or ice if desired to control how sweet your punch is.

Tanglewood's Easy Canine CookiesThis recipe is to be consumed by Dogs!Submitted by Tanglewoodmcdobbie-hu@unsplash"This issue, there’s a treat for the hounds as well! These are super easy and very affordable to make, and use basic household ingredients. My dogs adore them - they are quite hard though, so may not be great for an older dog." ~ TanglewoodIngredients
70g butter, softened
750ml whole wheat flour
125ml powdered skim milk
175ml water
1 egg, beaten

Prep Time: 15-20 minutes
Baking Time: 50 minutes

1. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and flour with a pastry cutter and set aside.
2. In a small bowl, dissolve the powdered milk in water and whisk in the egg.
3. Make a well in the flour mixture and gradually stir in the liquid until well blended.
4. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 3-4 minutes, until it sticks together and is easy to work with.
5. Roll out the dough (I suggest reflouring your surface, since it can be slightly sticky) until it’s between 6mm to 12mm in thickness - that depends on how crunchy you want your biscuits to be.
6. Cut into whatever shape you want, and place on a greased baking sheet.
7. Bake for 50 minutes - again, depending on how large and thick your cookies are - at 160C / 325F.

Helpful Hints

  • We don’t usually have milk powder, so I generally substitute it with a little bit of real milk, and add some extra flour to swing the balance. Don’t add too much, though - like all mammals, dogs’ digestive systems aren’t designed to process a lot of milk after they’ve been weaned.
  • To give this some extra yum factor, add some chicken/beef stock or stock cubes/powder.

Tanglewood's Vanilla Sugar CookiesSubmitted by Tanglewoodronise-daluz@unsplash"Although they're time-consuming, these biscuits are versatile and delicious. You can eat them iced or plain, but their style is perfect for intricate designs with icing. If you want to make them ahead, you can store the dough in the fridge for up to three days - since there are eggs in it, I wouldn't suggest any longer than this." ~ TanglewoodIngredients

biscuits
500g cake flour
250g salted butter, cut into cubes and softened
250g castor sugar
3 eggs
1 tbsp vanilla essence

royal icing
2-3 large egg whites
5ml lemon juice
750ml icing sugar

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Refrigeration Time: 90+ minutes (in total)
Baking Time: 10-15 minutes

Method
1. Mix the butter, castor sugar, and vanilla together until just combined. Then add the eggs and stir.
2. Add the flour gradually - trust me, you’ll thank me later - but be careful not to overwork the mix.
3. Once the mixture has formed a dough, wrap in clingfilm and chill for at least an hour.
4. Roll the dough to about 4mm in thickness and cut into shapes of your choice. Chill on baking trays for at least 30 minutes.
5. Preheat the oven to 175C / 350F while the dough is chilling, and then bake for 10-15 minutes.
6. When the edges have just browned and the tops are lightly golden, remove from the oven and transfer to a rack after a few minutes of cooling on the pan.
7. Ice as desired (recipe below) or eat them plain - either way, they’re delicious!
8. To make the royal icing (egg white-based icing that hardens when dry), whisk the egg white with the lemon juice briefly until combined. Add the sifted sugar and beat on a low speed for 5-10 minutes until the mixture is glossy and smooth. Leave covered under a damp tea cloth for 30 minutes, and then add more sugar if necessary.

Helpful Hints
  •  This recipe makes about 20 cookies, but if you want a smaller or bigger batch it’s very easy to adjust, and doesn’t react badly to doubling/tripling. (Although you might get tired of rolling out all that dough.)
  •  These are very very easy to burn, so keep a close eye on them.

Page: 15Issue 2   |   Vol. 1   |  August 2021The Eden EchoThe Voices of HEETrailblazing ArtistsDoggone Great Artist- Meet WildWillow By: SCFBlack Canyon is one of WildWillow's all time favorite art pieces. This month’s stunning cover Dog~Day is courtesy of WildWillow (Willow) August’s featured artist. It will be available for auction Sept 1 - Sept 15.
A perfect choice for this month’s artist, Willow is a huge dog fan. She does daily yoga and enjoys hiking, so she is always out and about with her dogs. She especially loves herding breeds. She told me she really enjoys sleeping and says “there is nothing better than a dog laying by your side.” Her friends love her ambition and she is admittedly constantly driven and a brutal perfectionist. If she could change anything about herself, she would erase her habit of procrastination. She has learned, and would like to pass on to other artists, that there is nothing more precious than being able to simultaneously self evaluate to determine your weak spots all while appreciating what you have done. It is a delicate balance to achieve but entirely worth it. Willow said she has been heavily inspired by Jello of Jello's Warmbloods, and has always admired her style and art pieces. She has struggled in the past to accept her own creativity, but now she has learned to embrace it instead of suppress it. Now she is letting it grow and finds a lot of beauty within it. Her greatest joy of being an artist is bringing other’s ideas to fruition. “I’m always so pleased when someone tells me it was better than they envisioned.” Her least favorite thing about being an artist is the burnout. “It is so difficult to stay on a roll and complete pieces quickly. Complete recolors are also a pain.”
Willow originally joined HEE in December 2015, took a few extended breaks, but has been a consistent member for the past 2 to 3 years. In her HEE stable, she enjoys breeding Sport Horses for both ratings and color. I asked her who her favorite Leader Board stallion is and she went old school and said she adored Vatican.

Willow first began experimenting with art on HEE in 2018. She found that she was struggling to make enough money for upgrades and admitted she was too cheap to buy art for her horses, so she started creating her own art. By July 2018 she had opened her art shop. Now she is a Tier 1 artist and her art shop is WildWillow Studios. Willow has a wide range of talents and her creations can vary from realistic to heavy fantasy. She really enjoys the challenges of doing dark pieces.
Banshee seen below is a lovely dark themed pieceWillow enjoys doing her art projects during the evenings while watching Netflix. She is a huge fan of biopic movies, and says she will never pass up an opportunity to watch the Jurassic Park movies. Currently, she has been following the Olympics, especially the equestrian events, swimming and gymnastics. She used to enjoy sketching, but has not done it for several years. Though she is a talented artist, it is just a temporary hobby for her. Her passion lies within writing which she is pursuing as a career. She is currently in the midst of writing two different novels. She is also and avid reader and her favorite authors are William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe.

If Willow ever wins the lottery, her plans are to move north to Canada or Maine, buy a cozy cabin and become a recluse.
The Eden Echo would like to give a heartfelt thank you to WildWillow for stepping up so quickly and helping us when our scheduled artist had technical difficulties at the last minute.  We hope that artist gets their computer fixed soon and we will see them in a future issue.
